I had no idea Ford has been going the key pad door combination thing for so long. My families my’s 93 Sable Wagon had it, but this is almost 10 years earlier.
So why the heck has no other car maker even attempted something similar.

Great question. Conversely, I always make fun of these as something from 1988 (when I first saw it on a Taurus). But they still seem to work and people love them. Totally baffled why it never caught on widely.

my best guess is they are a pain in the arse.

I think it started on the T-bird and Lincoln Mark vi in 1980. Here’s an ad for it with the t-bird.
It’s hard to imagine they’ve been offering it almost 40 years.

They work well, keyless entry has made them redundant, iirc Ford had a patent on them which is why other automakers didn’t have them.

Maximas had them.

My dad locks his key in the truck all the time and uses the pad to unlock it. The 3 of 5 buttons are so worn down.

Huh. That’s the only non FoMoCo product I’ve haven’t seen on it.

I would seem to me that they could have a design patent on them, but you can’t patent the idea of a number pad with buttons on t.

How? I had no problem with them at 4-9 years old. Lol

The world of auto Patents is strange, Packard once had a patent about Headlights being built into the fenders, it is the reason the cord 810 had pop up headlights.

I feel like there was another Nissan that had it but I can’t remember. Besides the Quest, which had it because the Mercury Villager had it.

Maybe getting access to that was part of Nissan and Ford’s Parentership that spawned the Villager

It’s possible, but even the earlier Maximas had it. This was from an ‘86:

They are still handy though, if you want to go for a swim or a run, or any other situation you want to lock your fob in the car and still get back in it.
